Simultaneously, tweeters and commentators have come to the site’s defense, alleging Twitter is here to stay.</p>
<p><img class="size-medium wp-image-2995 alignleft" title="Twitter Whale" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/twitter_fail_whale.jpg-300x225.png" alt="Tweeters seek to right the ship" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Skeptics point to mediocre 2009 in numbers</h2>
<p>While the latest social media network reported a small bump in membership in December, its end of the year numbers were a staggering 24% less than June 2009.  Ironically, while Twitter was featured more and more frequently in cable news broadcasts – and stood at the center of the Iran election coverage in June – the network hemorrhaged members.  Twitter’s growth problem has thus become a billion dollar question: how can the social network grow? Some analysts are pointing to the immeasurability of new Twitter members, as an increasing proportion of members are tweeting from mobile devices and via apps, which were not captured in the statistics.  Others claim Twitter has not yet reached a critical mass, like Facebook already has, encouraging potential members to join to keep track of everyone else they know.</p>
<h2>Twitter makes sharing information simple</h2>
<p>Yet, Twitter remains extremely popular and has been put to great use recently in light of the earthquake in Haiti, as tweeters are sharing thoughts, needs, websites for charity, and prayers through the social network.  <em>New York Times</em> media reporter, David Carr, remains optimistic about the future of Twitter.  In his article titled &#8220;<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/weekinreview/03carr.html" target="_blank">Why Twitter Will Endure</a>,&#8221; Carr argues that Twitter allows for the consumption of a massive array of information.  Yes, people tweet about their choice of cereal, but they are also sharing news articles, videos, blogs, and discussion boards where responses are not limited to 140 characters or less. As Steven Johnson, another journalist and technology commentator for <em>TIME</em>, observes, “the history of the Internet suggests that there have been cool Web sites that go in and out of fashion and then there have been open standards that become plumbing. Twitter is looking more and more like plumbing, and plumbing is eternal.”</p>

<p>The party was a huge success, with the attendance of several staff members- interns, developers and all.  A surprising guest appearance was made by the CEO of Internet Marketing Inc., Brent Gleeson, who is based in the San Diego office.  His arrival not only added an element of surprise, but also much entertainment as well.</p>
<p>The party involved a champagne toast and then a sushi dinner at New Ashiya in downtown Manhattan.  It was hard to even hear normal conversation over the continuous ruckus of laughter that practically usurped the night.  I am honestly surprised anyone had time to eat.</p>
<p>So you may ask: what&#8217;s my point?  It&#8217;s the small things that count.  Having a holiday party for your employees really inspires good cheer and let&#8217;s them know how much they truly are appreciated when it really counts.  If you don&#8217;t already do it, I suggest you make it your next New Years resolution- not only will good memories be shared but the team bonding is priceless.</p>

<p>Although mid December is not technically Winter it was wintry enough especially compared to a much more Fall like mid October date starting next year.</p>
<p>The <a title="ses chicago" href="http://www.searchenginestrategies.com/chicago/" target="_blank"><strong>2009 SES Chicago</strong></a> started on December 7th with a dusting of snow outside as <strong>Jeff Jarvis</strong> kicked it off with his interesting keynote on the link economy being part of the greater <strong>Google</strong> economy the online space is currently in.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-2923 aligncenter" title="ses chicago 2009" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ses-chicago-2009.jpg" alt="ses chicago 2009" width="400" height="125" /></p>
<p>The sessions that followed had a predominant SEO theme versus the growing social media focus of <strong></strong><strong>Pubcon</strong> &amp; <strong>SMX</strong> conferences in my opinion.</p>
<p>Although the <strong>Google</strong> Real Time Search did evolve into a hot topic near the closing of <strong>SES</strong> as <strong>Rae Hoffman</strong> was furiously writing a great post in the speaker lounge on the <a title="google real time spam" href="http://outspokenmedia.com/seo/google-real-time-spam/" target="_blank">real time search spamming potential</a>.</p>
<p>I was particularly surprised there wasn&#8217;t much focus to online mobile marketing, beyond one session, which is sure to be a greater focus in all of the major Internet Marketing conferences in 2010.</p>
<p><a title="matt mcgowan" href="http://twitter.com/matt_mcGowan" target="_blank"><strong>Matt McGowan</strong></a> &amp; <a title="mike grehan" href="http://twitter.com/mikegrehan" target="_blank"><strong>Mike Grehan</strong></a> were generous enough to have me speak on a site clinic with <a title="tony wright" href="http://twitter.com/tonynwright" target="_blank"><strong>Tony Wright</strong></a> &amp; <a title="elisabeth osmeloski" href="http://twitter.com/elisabethos" target="_blank"><strong>Elisabeth Osmeloski</strong></a> before I had to quickly take the shuttle through the snow to Midway Airway where my flight back to San Diego encountered chronic delays.</p>
<p>The wet snow &amp; flight delays at this recent <strong>SES Chicago</strong> will be a distant memory when <strong>SES</strong> comes back to the United States here in San Diego February 2010.</p>
<p>Also this is my last post here on the <a title="internet marketing inc blog" href="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/" target="_self"><strong>Internet Marketing Inc Blog</strong></a> as I will be joining <strong>Resource Nation</strong> as the SEO Director there going into 2010 but be sure to check back here for the latest Internet Marketing news as well on Android at my personal site <a title="google and blog" href="http://www.googleandblog.com/" target="_self"><strong>GoogleAndBlog</strong></a>.</p>

<p><strong>Google</strong> first alluded to this <a title="google next generation" href="http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/08/help-test-some-next-generation.html" target="_blank">next generation infrastructure shift</a> back on August 10th.</p>
<p>This shifts will change how <strong>Google</strong> does its crawling, indexing, and ranking as it will be on a much faster scale in many respects can be seen as a response to both <strong>Bing</strong> &amp; <strong>Twitter</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Matt Cutts</strong> put everyone on notice at <strong>PubCon</strong> in Las Vegas this November that <em>Caffeine</em> will be released after the holidays and that your site&#8217;s load time will be a factor.</p>
<p>Site loading speed is important not just for better search results but as well for mobile browsers which with <a title="android" href="http://www.googleandblog.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Android</strong></a> &amp; the <strong>iPhone</strong> is exponentially increasing in search share, so Google has provided a <a title="google speed" href="http://code.google.com/speed/" target="_blank">tool to help your site get faster</a>.</p>
<p>I directly asked Matt while he was fielding questions during the <a title="search engine smackdown" href="http://outspokenmedia.com/internet-marketing-conferences/pubcon-smackdown-session/" target="_blank"><strong>Search Engine Smackdown</strong></a> at <strong>PubCon</strong> if the SERPs or Search Engine Result Pages will be rendered in AJAX with the <em>Caffeine</em> update to which he said no, but they are still experimenting with it.<br />
<center><div id="attachment_2868" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 410px"><img class="size-full wp-image-2868" title="matt cutts michael martin pool" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Cutts-Pool.jpg" alt="Matt Cutts &amp; Michael Martin playing pool at The Garage in Seattle" width="400" height="267" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Matt Cutts &amp; Michael Martin playing pool at The Garage in Seattle</p></div></center></p>
<p>Just as I learned to not beat <strong>Matt Cutts</strong> when playing pool if you want to keep your rankings, you should also test your site out before a big <strong>Google </strong>algorithm shift such as this.</p>
<p>You can test your results on the one <strong>Google</strong> datacenter containing <em>Caffeine</em> that pushes those results about half the time at <a href="http://209.85.225.103/" title="google caffeine" target="_blank">209.85.225.103</a></p>

<p>The <em>Organic Site Clinic</em> on Wednesday November 11th was only myself &amp; <a title="alan k'necht twitter" href="http://twitter.com/aknecht" target="_blank"><strong>Alan K&#8217;necht</strong></a> of <a title="k'nechtology" href="http://www.knechtology.com/" target="_blank"><strong>K&#8217;nechtology</strong></a> where we were aligned on foundational &amp; canonical SEO for the sites we reviewed as we are both sticklers for proper back-end coding.</p>
<p>We even came across a site that was using a MORE link to hide content at the bottom of each of their pages &#8211; the site will remain unnamed <img src='http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Later that Wednesday after lunch I was on an <em>SEO Design &amp; Organic Site Structure</em> panel with <a title="ted ulle twitter" href="http://twitter.com/tedulle" target="_blank"><strong>Ted Ulle</strong></a> of <a title="converseon" href="http://www.converseon.com/v2/home/" target="_blank"><strong>Converseon</strong></a>, <a title="lindsay walker twitter" href="http://twitter.com/Lyndseo" target="_blank"><strong>Lyndsay Walker</strong></a> of <a title="canada's web shop" href="http://www.thewebshop.ca/home" target="_blank"><strong>Canada&#8217;s Web Shop</strong></a>, <a title="scott polk twitter" href="http://twitter.com/scottpolk" target="_blank"><strong>Scott Polk</strong></a> of <a title="search and social media" href="http://searchandsocialmedia.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Search &amp; Social Media</strong></a>.</p>

<p>We all agreed we would keep our presentations to under 5 minutes so people could ask plenty of questions and get some great takeaways rather than just simply hearing us talk on and on, on stage.</p>
<p>I spoke on foundational SEO concentrating on what I term the big 3 of the .htaccess, robots.txt, &amp; Webmaster Tools &#8211; I included my presentation below:<br />
<center>
<div id="__ss_2522724" style="width: 425px; text-align: left;"><a style="font:14px Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;display:block;margin:12px 0 3px 0;text-decoration:underline;" title="PubCon Seo Design &amp; Organic Site Structure - Michael Martin" href="http://www.slideshare.net/MichaelMartin/pubcon-seo-design-organic-site-structure-michael-martin">PubCon Seo Design &amp; Organic Site Structure &#8211; Michael Martin</a><object style="margin:0px" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="355" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=michaelmartin-seodesignorganicsitestructure-091117152537-phpapp02&amp;rel=0&amp;stripped_title=pubcon-seo-design-organic-site-structure-michael-martin" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed style="margin:0px" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="355" src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=michaelmartin-seodesignorganicsitestructure-091117152537-phpapp02&amp;rel=0&amp;stripped_title=pubcon-seo-design-organic-site-structure-michael-martin" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<div style="font-size: 11px; font-family: tahoma,arial; height: 26px; padding-top: 2px;">View more <a style="text-decoration:underline;" href="http://www.slideshare.net/">presentations</a> from <a style="text-decoration:underline;" href="http://www.slideshare.net/MichaelMartin">Michael Martin</a>.</div>
</div>
<p></center></p>
<p>Ted went over some great foundational design information while Lyndsay went into coding advice and Scott provided some great tips, but where I disagreed with Scott is on using file extensions over directories.</p>
<p>I like &amp; respect <strong>Scott Polk</strong> as he is great speaker with a wealth of knowledge &amp; experience coming from <a title="bruce clay inc" href="http://www.bruceclay.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Bruce Clay</strong></a> thus I didn&#8217;t want to undermine him publicly so I simply nodded in agreement with Ted on stage with him stating he prefers directories.</p>
<p>All things being equal a page at <em>abc.com/xyz.html</em> has just a good chance to rank as <em>abc.com/xyz</em>/ but with the directory page you have the added benefit of not having to change reference links if you go to another web page format such as php, asp, cfm, etc plus I feel its better organizationally since you can place related pages &amp; files in this directory giving them added keyword weight.</p>
<p>Scott stuck to his guns on extensions over directories while also being correct that you can simply resolve the new web page format issue in the .htaccess, but I still contend directories are better long term both organizationally &amp;  for SEO.</p>
<p><strong>What do you think?</strong></p>

<p>Until just a few days ago, Lala was a fairly unknown online music streaming site.  Since its 2006 launch, the site has experienced growth rates far inferior to other music sites like Myspace and Pandora.  That is, until a partnership with Google suddenly moved their company into the everyday internet vocabulary.</p>
<p>Try this: type in a band or song name into the Google search box, and check out the first results that come up.  Rather than directing you to Myspace or the band’s official website,  you can now listen to the entire song, for free, with one click.  For example, if you were to type in the up-and-coming band The xx into the box, your results would look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2789" title="Search for The xx using Google Lala feature" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Picture-10.png" alt="Search for The xx using Google Lala feature" width="594" height="263" /></p>
<p>The first time you listen, the service costs you nothing; for every time after that, it’s a nominal fee of $.10.  Add this to the laundry list of Google’s cutting-edge innovations like Google Voice, Google Wave, and the Android phone, that have all recently been released.</p>
<p>Also, keep a lookout for a new Lala iPhone application, which will allow music streaming similar to the online model: free for the first listen, $.10 per every future listen .  Rumor has it the app will be available mid-November, and likely with a very high demand.</p>
<p>…let’s just say we’re in la-la-love.</p>

<ul>
<li>There were a lot of the same faces from other Internet Marketing conferences such as <strong>PubCon</strong> &amp; <strong>SMX Advanced</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>I thought there would be more corporations and neophytes to Internet Marketing at the conference than there were.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Weather was extremely warm the first couple days in New York City as it was similar to that in San Diego.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Less than half the attendees were at the last day of sessions on Wednesday which I felt were the best to attend.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The best part of conferences is not necessarily the sessions themselves but the networking after and talks during such as the extensive conversations I had with <strong>Stephan Spencer</strong> of <a title="netconcepts" href="http://www.netconcepts.com/" target="_blank"><strong>NetConcepts</strong></a>.</li>
</ul>
<p>I was also appreciative of all the live bloggers covering my session on <strong>Google Android</strong> Monday October 9th such as <a title="bruce clay" href="http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/archives/2009/10/mobile_search_a.html" target="_blank"><strong>Bruce Clay</strong></a>, <a title="outspoken media" href="http://outspokenmedia.com/internet-marketing-conferences/mobile-search-apps-opportunities/" target="_blank"><strong>Outspoken Media</strong></a>, <a title="10e20" href="http://www.10e20.com/blog/2009/10/06/smx-east-mobile-apps-strategies-and-local-search-tactics/" target="_blank"><strong>10e20</strong></a>, &amp;  <a title="seo roundtable" href="http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/020816.html" target="_blank"><strong>SEO Roundtable</strong></a>, as well <a title="webpronews" href="http://videos.webpronews.com/2009/10/13/cindy-krum-and-michael-martin-at-smx-east/" target="_blank"><strong>WebProNews</strong></a> for the interview below:</p>

<p>There are a wide variety of open source applications for promotions, events, fundraising, non-profit causes, etc.  But if you really want to personalize your brand&#8217;s social engagement, it should be done using customized social media technology such as <a title="Facebook applications" href="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/website-development/">Facebook applications</a> and widgets for mobile devices.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-2708 aligncenter" title="social media process" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/social-media-process.jpg" alt="social media process" width="483" height="334" /></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Promotional FaceBook applications are designed to engage users, create a fun and &#8220;viral&#8221; tool that can be shared, and increase the fan base (i.e. you must become a fan to enter the &#8220;Video Contest&#8221;.  Here is an example of a FaceBook application we built for Hilton Hotels&#8217; Video Vacation Contest where contestants must become a fan and then may upload videos nominating themsleves or friends/family to win a Mexico vacation.  It creats a fun way to involve the fan base and encourage them to &#8220;share&#8221; the contest opportunity with others.</p>
<p><img title="Hilton App" src="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Hilton-App.jpg" alt="Hilton App" width="468" height="516" /></p>
<p> </p>
<p>And then there is mobile marketing and widgets for mobile devices.  Providing your audience with apps and widgets to download is a great added value to any social media campaign.  The audience that accesses their social networks via their mobile device is growing exponentially.  eMarketer projects that mobile social network users worldwide will climb from 243 million in 2009 to 803 million in 2012!  <a title="Internet marketing" href="http://www.internetmarketinginc.com">Internet marketing </a>takes on many different forms but unless your brand is at least aware of the opportunities for social and mobile engagement, you are leaving money on the table!</p>
<p><script src="http://w.sharethis.com/widget/?tabs=web%2Cpost%2Cemail&amp;charset=utf-8&amp;style=default&amp;publisher=58075850-13f3-4801-a607-cafe561b8fce&amp;headerbg=%236b6b6b&amp;linkfg=%23ff7e00" type="text/javascript"></script></p>
