PubCon SEO Site Design & File Extension Debate
I was recently speaking at the 2009 PubCon in Las Vegas on both an Organic Site Review Clinic & an SEO Site Design Panel.
The Organic Site Clinic on Wednesday November 11th was only myself & Alan K’necht of K’nechtology where we were aligned on foundational & canonical SEO for the sites we reviewed as we are both sticklers for proper back-end coding.
We even came across a site that was using a MORE link to hide content at the bottom of each of their pages – the site will remain unnamed
Later that Wednesday after lunch I was on an SEO Design & Organic Site Structure panel with Ted Ulle of Converseon, Lyndsay Walker of Canada’s Web Shop, Scott Polk of Search & Social Media.
Moderating this motley crew was Christine Churchill of KeyRelevance with QA moderator Taylor Pratt of nFusion.

We all agreed we would keep our presentations to under 5 minutes so people could ask plenty of questions and get some great takeaways rather than just simply hearing us talk on and on, on stage.
I spoke on foundational SEO concentrating on what I term the big 3 of the .htaccess, robots.txt, & Webmaster Tools – I included my presentation below:
Ted went over some great foundational design information while Lyndsay went into coding advice and Scott provided some great tips, but where I disagreed with Scott is on using file extensions over directories.
I like & respect Scott Polk as he is great speaker with a wealth of knowledge & experience coming from Bruce Clay thus I didn’t want to undermine him publicly so I simply nodded in agreement with Ted on stage with him stating he prefers directories.
All things being equal a page at abc.com/xyz.html has just a good chance to rank as abc.com/xyz/ but with the directory page you have the added benefit of not having to change reference links if you go to another web page format such as php, asp, cfm, etc plus I feel its better organizationally since you can place related pages & files in this directory giving them added keyword weight.
Scott stuck to his guns on extensions over directories while also being correct that you can simply resolve the new web page format issue in the .htaccess, but I still contend directories are better long term both organizationally & for SEO.

7 Things to Do Before You Start Designing a Website
Website design and development can be a frustrating process for both the designer and the client because it is a creative process and there are usually several people involved on both sides providing feedback and guidance. Everyone has a different opinion on what looks good and what will properly reflect the company’s brand image.
To avoid obstacles and communication issues throughout the website design process, it is better to spend more time on discovery and the initial planning. Here are seven tips to help ensure the end result is a success for both the client and the designer Internet marketing company.
ONE: Gain an Intimate Understanding of Their Business
This seems obvious but this step is often rushed. To truly provide value and show your client that your care about their business, you need to learn about their business model, revenue streams, financial goals, corporate culture, and future vision.
TWO: Know the Competition
It is important as the designer to understand who your client’s competitors are. Find out who their offline and online competition is. There may be a difference in who they are competing with in the search engine results and who they truly consider their competitor. You should know both sides and find out what their competition is doing right as well as where they are falling short.
THREE: Understand Their Design Goals
During the discovery process it is often helpful to provide the client with a questionnaire such as a “needs analysis” or “design questionnaire” so you can extract as much information as possible such as color pallet ideas, websites they like and don’t like, desired functionality, and basic conversion goals. For example, is the purpose of the site to simply inform, or will it be meant to generate new business, or both?
FOUR: Get a List of Website They Like
One of the best ways to get behind the “design” eye of your client is to have them provide you a list of three to five websites they like. Make sure they provide you with details about why they like the designs and any aspects about the sites they do not like.
FIVE: Understand Budget Ranges
This can be a sensitive discussion early on because the client will not want to give up any negotiating power by simply answering your question, “What is your Budget?” However, quite often the client does not have a sound understanding of how their vision for their new website will translate into design and development time…and money! That is why the discovery process is so important. Whether you are a freelance designer or a full scale Internet marketing company, the process should be the same. The budget will immediately help you communicate to the client what is possible and what is not.
SIX: Understand Functionality and Optimization Goals
This part is very important. Many times a designer may not be the individual actually developing the website. This can be problematic of the designer has more of a graphic design background and a limited understanding of the development process. Sometimes great designs don’t translate well on the web or may not be feasibly from a development perspective depending on the functionality needs of the client. Make sure you communicate with the development team so they understand how you plan to lay things out. All designers these days should also have at least a basic understanding of search engine optimization. It is frustrating for a client when they spend a lot of time and money having a great website designed only to find out month later that it has to be rebuilt for SEO purposes.

SEVEN: Functional Specifications
The result of the discovery process should be a very detailed FSD (functional specifications document) that both the website designer/developer and the client sign off on. This ensures that there is a blueprint to consult when there is confusion about what is or is not “in scope”. This is the MOST important part of the project and should not be rushed. The FSD should include details on design, functionality, timeline, budget, and all supporting details and documentation gathered during the discovery phase. A good FSD will include the wire frames and maybe even some initial design mocks. Make sure the FSD is in line with the contract and that deliverables are detailed. Because website design is a creative process, the client will think of things along the way that they did not initially communicate during discovery. Depending on how simple or complex these requests are, you can make a judgment call whether to include the additional requests or possible provide the client with an additional quote based on estimates hours.
Weaving SEO into Web Development
Most people probably assume some level of optimization goes into website development but usually this is not the case. Most often, SEO, if performed at all, comes much later when the stakeholders ask the marketing team why their site doesn’t show up for certain keywords. Search engine optimization is not normally involved in the web development process, though it definitely should be. Behind the scenes, unless there is a process in place, it can be difficult to weave SEO into the website development project plan.
So where does it fit in and why is it so important to perform SEO during website development?
The truth is that this is not news to SEO’s or most website developers but making it work is a different story. The answer to the question above is that SEO should fit into almost every aspect of you website development project plan. It should be part of the functional specifications document and outlined every step of the way. Ideally, there should be an SEO on the development team or at least consulting with the lead engineers and project managers.
This is important because by not integrating SEO into the whole development process, you can end up spending more money and time later on, trying to get it right. When you are talking about rolling out an existing site to a new platform, this is crucial. If the current site has rankings and even some of the smallest steps are missed, you could disappear from the SERPs (which ultimatley will cost you revenue and more costs related to fixing the issues).
Steps to consider when including SEO in the developement process:
- What are the goals of the website and how will certain keyword rankings support those goals?
- What is the defined keyword strategy and how will it be applied to title and meta descriptions?
- How will the important pages monetize and what are the necessary calls to action?
We must consider how SEO will affect the development process from day one. SEO should be considered during the follow steps (but not limited to):
- Discovery period – to define the goals, functionality, site map, content needed, etc.
- Functional specifications and project plan – to define HOW and WHERE SEO will play a role in each step
- Site map and wire frames – to ensure site architecture and layout abides by SEO guidelines
- Design – to ensure the proper balance of design, functionality, and SEO friendliness
- QA – SEOs should be a part of the QA especially when performing a redevelopment and rolling out a new site (i.e. 301 redirects)
- Hard launch – to ensure the site is properly submitted to the search engines and is being properly indexed
So what is the takeaway? SEO is always important ans should be a part of the process (but not because I say so). Make sure the firm building your new website understands SEO and will build for optimization. A site will never rank well without the basics of SEO architecture, and that starts in development.
SEO PageRank Sculpting
Google has made yet another change in their algorithm. As of last month, Google has changed the way they look at PageRank sculpting and “nofollow” links. Let’s first define PageRank. PageRank was designed by Google to show how valuable the search engines will percieve a webpage to be – ranking a page 1 through 10 (10 being the best). Many factors go into earning a good PageRank from Google, especially link popularity.
In a website, the power of a good PageRank can flow (or be distributed) from page to page. The deeper the site goes, the more diluted that influence becomes from page to page. A goood example would be a river or irrigation system. In desert regions you will see how green and lush the landscape is near a body of water. As you move further from that body of water, the irrigation has a diminishing effect and the land becomes less green. This is how the power of PageRank works as you move from the home page deeper into the sub pages.
To ensure that the more important sub pages (such as product pages or pages used for “selling” and conversions) benefit from the PageRank distribution the use of “nofollow” tags has been used. Let’s use the irrigation system analogy again. Let’s say you have only a certain amount of water to distribute so you want to make sure that the most important areas are irrigated. You could shut off the flow of water to certain areas. This is how “nofollow” links work.
Well, as always, things change. Nofollow links will no longer be able to control the flow of PageRank influence. The best way to combat this is to ensure websites have a sound SEO architecture and internal linking process. The best practices still apply so the more compelling content and inbound links you have the better. The higher your PageRank is, the more you will have to distribute. If possible, try not to make your site too deep…4 to 5 pages deep is ideal but not always possible.
It is still possible to control the flow of PageRank influence. It is really all about your site architecture. Link pages together in a logical way using a good breadcrumb strategy. If you can avoid it, don’t go further than 5 levels deep. Use anchor text links to connect good content pages to their parent category pages. Keep it simple and follow the usual rules. As far as what will happen to rankings, we’ll have to wait and see.
Shopping Cart Technology Unveiled
So you are ready to take the next step expanding your business online and embrace your internet marketing efforts. You no longer have to have a physical storefront to do business anymore. Today some of the most profitable businesses are online and only have an online presence. There is such a wide range of shopping cart solutions how do you choose the right one for your online venture? The most basic and important features of the shopping cart are 3:
- The Shopping cart allows the user to interact with the store and add items to their bag. This should also calculate taxes and shipping and charge the user while staying on your website.
- Shipping: This is the only delivery method for online shopping carts. You need to be able to integrate the cart with your preferred shipping provider this will alleviate many hassles in the future and will streamline your processes from start to finish. This is very important because if your shipping methods are not efficient you will end up needing to charge higher shipping prices in the future.
- Accepting online payment: No one likes to be limited. You need to be able to offer your clients several ways to paying. So make sure your shopping cart is able to integrate with various payment gateways and accepts several forms of payment. One of the easiest is over the phone and all you have to do is offer them a phone number to call.

There are 2 main components in a shopping cart the front end which is what the user sees and interacts with and the backend or the administrator’s area. When choosing a shopping cart here are a few tips to keep in mind for uability:
Offer a Guest Checkout: not all people like to sign up for an account when shopping. Especially for first time users to the store, or people that are shopping for gifts.
Security symbols: Make sure that your website is secure and not susceptible to hackers. No one wants to put their credit card number onto a website that they do not think is safe. Make sure to have your SSL certificate correctly installed and it is also a good idea to include the SSL providers logo on checkout pages.
One page checkout process: this facilitates the user through the checkout process.
These are just a few quick tips to making your shopping cart more user friendly and what to look for when choosing which to use!
Universal Search: Out with the Old, In with the New
The days of simple on page optimization are over and have been for a while. A year ago most search engine optimization strategies included the simple practices of basic site structure, seo copy written content, and building inbound links. As Google continues to progress and make new updates to the algorithms, we must also adapt and develop new strategies that will keep us competitive. A well-rounded approach is imperative which is why a good Internet marketing company can take on all aspects of search engine marketing and combine them to create a truly united front.
I tend to use the analogy of military combat when analyzing business and marketing situations. For example, the reason a small special operations force that has superior training and works as a team will always defeat a larger force with mediocre training is becasue each person on the spec ops team works in complete synergy with one another. In Internet marketing, it will no longer suffice to use one approach with a non-targeted strategy if you want to be competitive. A comprehensive online marketing plan will ensure true optimization of all online assets and maximum exposure and conversions.
So what does all this mean? What is Universal search? What are digital assets?
Bascially, it means that optimizing all of a company’s digital assets is the best way to ensure good rankings as they apply to Google’s new “universal” search. Universal search means that Google gives rankings to not only web pages anymore but also news results such as press releases, video content, images, local buiness results, etc. Simply optimizing the pages of a website will not ensure that a site will rank as well as its competitiors. Websites that use well rounded internet marketing strategies are getting traffic from other assets that appear in the search results pages. For example, a company’s web page might not appear for a specific result but a SEO optimized press release might. That press release if optimized properly would then have links back to the website which would drive trafic. The same situation would apply for video content appearing in the results. The vidoes if well optimized could then have links or calls to action noting the URL that people should follow.
So are we taking about social media?
Basically, yes. Social media is popular for many reasons other than viral marketing and online reputation management. Social media can be a fantastic provider of inbound links which of course supports the ongoing organic search engine optimization campaign. A good SEO company will optimize all a company’s digital assets to ensure the best possible ROI.
Where does conversion optimization come into play?
True conversion optimization is at the root of all online marketing strategies…or at least it should be. Nobody wants to spend time and money implementing any marketing plan unless there is a strategy to ensure conversions and ROI. Conversion optimization is more than just manipulating a web page to make the user do what you want. All marketing strategies should be completely complimentary and support the same goals…that goes for offline and online components.
Not so long ago, an SEO team would work independantly from a PPC team, and nobody would be communicating with the print team. These days that is just poor marketing. Everyone must be in constant communication with each other…that is, if you were to use different teams for each component. The best practice for having a truly effective online marketing plan is to use the same team for all aspects and make sure that team knows how to coordinate with traditional media aspects as well.
Is Keyword Research Necessary for Website Development?
It certainly should be! I will start by saying this…if you have a website design company or website development firm building you a site but they do not know anything about organic search engine optimization (SEO), your site will not be set up properly for achieving natural rankings. It is often a tough pill to swallow when someone just spent $50,000 on a website but then find out that it is invisible to Google. There are many important steps that should be taken during the website design phase of an Internet marketing campaign that will ensure long term visibility in the SERPs (search engine results pages).
So what does this have to do with keyword research? Let’s first define keyword research and then apply that definition to help answer this question. Keyword research is a process used by search engine optimization professionals to determine what key terms and phrases best apply to a given website or online marketing campaign. For example, if a company that sells shoes on their website, they would first want to begin by defining their exact goals and brand niche. Keywords associated with “shoes” are going to be very competitive so the company would want to narrow the focus and generate a list of terms directly associated with their products.
Here are some steps to take when starting keyword research:
- Determine the business goals you want to achieve through your online platform
- Define your brand, products, and services
- Start an initial list of terms you would want your site to appear for
- Use both broad terms and very specific terms (and combinations of them)
A good Internet marketing company will use your initial list to begin research but will also do extensive research on your industry as it applies to online searches. Many times the terms and keywords a company thinks they should appear for may not be the most appropriate terms for traffic and conversions. For example, a company owner may want to appear for terms more associated with their brand. During the research process though it might be discovered that those terms are never searched. This of course means that the terms are not competitive but there may not be a need to use resources to focus on them if they won’t drive targeted traffic.
The difference between broad/generic terms and “long tail” terms: Broad terms are generally defined as the more competitive and less specific keywords associated with a search. For example, if you sell used cars in downtown Philidelphia, you may not want to try to focus on just the term “used cars”. Broad terms like this are very competitive and some sites will not have the ability to reach page one of Google. Many experts believe the broad terms are useless for conversions anyway. If your site appears for broad terms like this it will drive large amounts of traffic and be great for brand exposure, but in the long run it will be the more specific terms that will convert.
Using this example, someone who types in “used car dealer downtown Philidelphia” will be much more likely to convert than someone just searching the terms “used cars”. This is why using a mix of long tail keywords is so important too. Long tail terms are the more specific and often geographically targeted keyword phrases. Another example would be to compare a broad term like “Manhattan apartments” and a long tail term like “Manhattan highrise apartments near Central Park”. The long tail terms like this generally have a higher conversion rate for obvious reasons…they are more specific and will drive more targeted quality traffic.
We won’t go into the intricate details of developing a good keyword list right now because I want to get into the discussion of how important it is for website development. Why spend time and money building a site if it will never have the ability to appear in the natural search engine placements. Makes sense right? Unfortunately, this is where many website design firms fall short. It is imperative to understand at least the basics of SEO in order to build the proper framework for a website.
A good Internet marketing company will build a website keeping the following things in mind:
- Proper keywords associated with each page
- On page content – ensuring those keywords are used
- Title tags – using most relevant keywords associtaed with each page
- Meta descriptions – the source code must contain a description that uses the keywords associated with the page
- Keywords – the source code will also show a list of the most relevant keywords for each page
- H1, H2 tags – these must be embedded in each page as well to support the title tags and content on the page – again, keywords must be used
- Site map – I don’t know how many times I have seen fancy websites that do not even include a site map; without this the search engines can not properly index your pages and you will not rank
All of the elements above can of course be handled during an orgainc search engine optimization campaign but they really should be handled during the development process…otherwise, you will just have to spend more time and money having an SEO company or online marketing company redo the work! Save yourself time and energy and hire a website development company that knows SEO!
Well Rounded SEO – More Important Than Ever
Many people out there think SEO is just about getting to the first page of Google and simply entails putting keywords in meta tags. Search engine optimization is an art and science with a huge learning curve for both client and professional SEO consultant. Many times clients are confused why an SEO company is making design recommendations or suggesting copywriting changes. Sometimes an SEO company will suggest a complete redevelopment of a site and will not touch it until that happens. These are very difficult things for a client to hear, especially if they have a site that is visited frequently (which means they probably have a fairly high opinion of their site).
With the new emerging trends and search engine algorithms, SEO will not be just about rankings anymore (this being a common misconception). It will be about the end results such as traffic and more importantly, conversions. A conversion could be some kind of registration, a newsletter sign up, an online sale, etc. Whatever your business goals are, your online marketing tools need to be a means to that end.
A truly well-rounded Internet marketing company will offer all of the important aspects of SEO which really does involve additonal strategy such as web design, development, information architecture, URL rewriting, and copy writing. Depending on the site, there might be months of work needed to be done simply to prepare a site for proper search engine optimization. As I mentioned above, sometimes a tough reality is faced by a client when they are told their website needs a complete overhaul before SEO can start. In the long run though, only a healthy platform with good well-rounded SEO strategy applied will yield lasting results.
The goals behind SEO should no longer be focused simply on first page rankings for the top keywords associated with the campaign. The business goals for the client need to be set first, then you can reverse engineer the Internet marketing strategy to support all those goals. As Google rolls out personal and universal search functions, we all will start getting slightly different results for the same searches based on our own prefernces and user behavior. That said, number one rankings will not matter as much as overall user experince, the value your site offers, and how it helps your business grow. Getting rankings is only one small step towards true business development.
We have all run searches and clicked on some of the first page results only to find a less than appealing website with poor navigation and site architecture. Nevertheless, the site is right there on page one. Maybe some good SEO principles have been applied but maybe not. However, the online consumer/user is continually becoming more sophisticated. For a company to have a sub-par online rpresence will do then no good. Businesses need a site that can not only be found, but that offers the best possible value in accordance with their business. The site must also be design to transform traffic into fuel for reaching the business goals. Obviously, if it is an e-commerce site, then it should sell products. If it is an advertising site, then it should generate leads for the advertisers. You get the idea.
All of the concepts mentioned above are part of a comprehensie well-rounded search engine optimization/Internet marketing campaign. If you have a business in need of transforming your online presence, there is no better time to get started. It doesn’t happen over night so invest the time and resources now!
SEO Website Design
There is a big difference in basic website design and design done with SEO in mind. What good is a site if it will never have the chance to achieve good rankings in the SERPs for relevant keywords? Many website design companies out there are very good at what they do, but a truly well rounded Internet Marketing company will develop websites with search engine optimization in mind from day one.
Assuming a website development firm is building both the front end and back end of the site SEO needs to be part of the plan, even if it is not “part of the plan”. If a firm is hired just to build the skin and another group will be handling development, coding and implementation, these two teams should be in communication from the very beginning.
So what is SEO website design?
These days, with Internet marketing on the tip of everyone’s tung, website design and development should always incorporate proper SEO site structure. Three of the five or so key elements in a search engine friendly site are site structure, internal linking, and unique content. All of this should be part of the plan before a wire frame is even built.
The best way to accomplish all this is by using the following steps:
- Perform a lengthy discovery period with the client as soon as the project is taken on. This should ultimately encompass many conversations and take up to two weeks or more (depeneding on the size and scope of the project).
- Discuss keyword research and understand the client’s brand and target audience.
- Develop and detailed Functional Specifications Document that includes ALL aspects of the project including keywords, technical specifications, timelines, milestones, etc. The FSD should include a section discussing optimization requirements, title tags, meta tags, and content (on page content, blogs, forums, etc.)
A good Internet Marketing company that offers website design will deliver a website that uses proper site structure, has great internal linking, contains appropriate amounts of unique content with keywords, and has title tags, meta tags, H1 tags and URLs that support that content. Even if the firm is not going to be performing SEO at a future date, any client these days should expect a website product that has a healthy foundation from which to perform proper SEO strategies.
