I took a marketing class when I was studying at Sydney Uni back in 2001. I had never taken a marketing class and I was intrigued by many aspects of the course, but one part stood out in particular. We opened the class with words like Zipper, Xerox, Rollerblades, Kleenex and a few others. You know what these words have in common? They are all brands names that have been incorporated into the English language. That is some pretty powerful branding, and this was before you were promoting stuff on the web through Search Engine Optimization, so kudos should be given to the people behind promoting those products. Ask yourself how many times in an office you have asked someone to Xerox something for you. See what I mean? Now, in today’s day and age, we deal with the Internet in some form everyday. Whether, you’re checking sport scores on your mobile or simply popping in for some e-mail, there is no doubt that the Internet touches us each and every day. People now are experience websites occurring in typical sentences. Have you ever told someone to Google something? Or have you ever said “Hey, just Facebook me?” When did these URL’s become verbs? Wouldn’t the appropriate statement simply be: “Hey, you can e-mail me through Facebook.com.” This is in large part to excellent viral marketing. Are we lazy as a race? Or have these URL’s (and there are many) simply infiltrated our lives to a point where we accept them as everyday language?
